OUR HISTORY

Hillside Cottage Ted and Carelle built Hillside Cottage in 2002 to offer a respite from their busy lives and to fulfill the needs of an expanding family to interact, rest and play together. On one hand, they wanted a pleasant hideaway (with enough space for the whole family and guests), but they also wanted a place where they had a chance to explore natural wonders.

They built their cottage in Duluth because of the varied activities and intellectual pursuits that the region has to offer. There is no city quite like Duluth, the last major city in the United States before the Canadian border, located on the North Shore of Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world.

The cottage feels like grandma's house, but with all the conveniences of the 21st century. Little bits of whimsy can be found throughout. The colors and materials are overall simple, reminiscent of a Scandinavian country home, making Hillside Cottage both a comfortable and charming place to visit.

Ted and Carelle invite you to share their retreat and hope that you will enjoy the spirit of Hillside Cottage, Duluth and the North Shore.

"I had rather be shut up in a very modest cottage with my books, my family and a few old friends ... than to occupy the most spendid post, which any human power can give." - THOMAS JEFFERSON
